Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2-3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon green gel food coloring
  • holiday sprinkles, for decorating

Equipment

  • 9×13 inch baking pan
  • Parchment Paper
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Whisk and spatula
  • electric mixer
  • Cooling rack
  • Offset spatula (for frosting)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk melted butter and sugar until combined. Add eggs one at a time, whisking after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.
  3. Stir in cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs (not wet batter). Let cool completely.
  5. Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually mix in powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Add green food coloring and beat until thick and smooth. Adjust consistency with more sugar or milk if needed.
  6. Spread frosting over cooled brownies. Add sprinkles immediately. Chill for at least 30 minutes before slicing for clean edges.

Notes

Pro Tip: For ultra-fudgy brownies, remove from the oven when a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs—don’t overbake.
Shortcut: Use a box brownie mix and focus on the frosting for a 15-minute prep version.
Christmas Tree Brownies: Slice into triangles, pipe extra frosting as garland, and top with candy star sprinkles.
Flavor Twist: Add 1 teaspoon peppermint extract to the brownie batter for a festive minty version.
