Full English Breakfast mornings are honestly a little slice of weekend heaven. Ever catch yourself drooling over someone’s big fry-up on TV or Instagram? Same here.

Thing is, figuring out what goes on the plate (not to mention, cooking all that stuff at once)… it can get a bit messy, literally and mentally. Don’t worry though.

I’m about to break it down for you, so you can whip up a five-star restaurant Full English Breakfast right in your own tiny kitchen. No weird chef words, I promise.

What is a full English breakfast?

So, what actually is a Full English Breakfast? If you’ve never seen one in person, picture a plate loaded with all the good stuff: sausages, bacon, eggs, grilled tomatoes, beans, mushrooms… honestly, sometimes black pudding, and always toast (don’t argue with me on this one). It’s a classic British meal, mainly eaten in the morning but—let’s be real—no shame in having it for dinner. Folks in the UK are so into their Full English Breakfast that it’s basically a national treasure. The meal covers salty, savory, crunchy, and soft—all in one, usually piping hot and enough to feed a small army… or just you, if you’re hungry enough. People also call it a ‘fry-up’ if you want to sound a bit more local. Total comfort food, no contest.

History and popularity of the full English breakfast

Okay, a bit of nerdy backstory (don’t roll your eyes—it’s kinda interesting). The Full English Breakfast goes way back, like centuries. In olden days, wealthy English families started their days with a gigantic breakfast spread. No tiny oat bars back then, just full-on feasting. Over time, it became less about showing off and more about fueling hard workers—farmers, builders, you name it. These days, anyone can get one, whether in a cozy London café or a no-frills roadside pub. It’s not just for tourists, either. Brits grow up having these, especially on lazy weekends or holidays. Honestly, if you ever travel to the UK, not trying a Full English Breakfast is basically a crime (okay, not legally, but you know what I mean).

“I tried my first Full English Breakfast last summer in Brighton, and now I totally get why people go wild for it! Haven’t stopped craving that combo since.” — Emma D.

Key components and variations of a full English breakfast

Let’s get real: every Full English Breakfast is a little different. Some folks swear you need black pudding. Others say it’s optional (I’m team optional, for the record). The key stuff you’ll almost always see: crispy bacon, sausages (Cumberland if you want to get posh), eggs (fried, poached, or scrambled—it’s your call), baked beans, grilled tomato halves, mushrooms, and toast. Now, sometimes you get extras like hash browns, bubble and squeak (that’s leftover potatoes and cabbage, fried up), or even fried bread if you’re feeling bold. The point is, part of the fun is mixing it up to what you love or, honestly, whatever you’ve got in the fridge. Some vegetarians swap in veggie sausages or grilled halloumi and nobody’s judging.

No matter the twists you choose, the core of a Full English Breakfast is that everything’s hot, filling, and kind of makes you want to nap after.

How to make a full English breakfast

I’m not gonna lie—timing is everything here. That’s what keeps your eggs gooey, your beans hot, and your bacon crispy, all at once. Here’s how I pull it off:

  1. Prep ahead: Get everything out, chop your mushrooms, cut the tomatoes, set out the beans.
  2. Start with the sausages: They take the longest, about 15 minutes in a medium pan. Keep nudging ‘em so they get brown all over.
  3. Bacon in next: After sausages are halfway done, pop in your bacon. It goes quick, so keep your eye on it unless you like it burnt.
  4. Mushrooms and tomatoes: Slice mushrooms, halve your tomatoes, and throw both in a pan with a splash of oil. Tomatoes only need a quick char.
  5. Beans: Warm those beans in a small pot. Low and slow so nothing sticks.
  6. Eggs last: Fry or scramble your eggs at the very end, right before plating. Otherwise they get cold and sad.
  7. Toast: Whack some bread in the toaster while your eggs cook.

There you go. Stack it all up, do a little happy dance, and eat it straight away. Timing feels tricky at first, but after one or two goes, you’ll have it nailed.

What to serve with a full English breakfast

You want the rest of your breakfast spread to keep things balanced, right? Here’s how I do it most of the time:

  • A mug of strong tea is required, even if you’re a coffee loyalist.
  • Add some orange juice if you want to pretend this meal is healthy.
  • HP Sauce or ketchup for that extra umph.
  • Maybe squeeze in a serving of fried bread for special occasions.

No need to go overboard. The Full English Breakfast is already a whole situation on its own. But the little touches on the side? Chef’s kiss.

Common Questions

Do I really need black pudding for a Full English Breakfast?

Nope. It’s traditional, but honestly, lots of folks skip it. Try it if you’re curious, ignore it if you aren’t.

Can I make a vegetarian Full English Breakfast?

Absolutely! Go for veggie sausages, fried halloumi, and skip the bacon. Still tastes awesome.

What’s the best way to cook the eggs?

Personally? Fried is classic, but poached or scrambled works fine. Do whatever makes you happiest.

Why do Brits eat beans for breakfast?

No clue, but it just works. The sweetness ties the whole plate together. Give it a shot, you might love it.

Can I prepare anything ahead?

Sausages and mushrooms reheat okay, but the rest—especially eggs and toast—are best fresh.

Your Own Five-Star Start to the Day

There’s really nothing like making a big Full English Breakfast at home. You get control over every little detail, and you don’t even have to get out of your pajamas.

Don’t let it scare you off—just jump in, figure out your rhythm, and claim your title as breakfast king (or queen).

  • 6 ounces mushrooms (170g)
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, cut in half

  • lard or cooking oil (as needed)

Equipment

  • large frying pan

  2. Warm baked beans in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  3. Cook bacon and sausages in a large frying pan over medium heat until browned. Transfer to warm oven dish.
  4. Using the same pan, cook mushrooms in bacon fat or added oil until browned. Transfer to oven dish.
  5. Season tomato halves with salt and place cut-side down in the pan. Add black pudding slices and cook both for 2 minutes per side. Transfer to oven dish.
